Some say that we stand again at a turning point in history. Once empires ruled, the ruling classes and the power of wealth and of force dominated the socio-political landscape. Many would say that this era has never ended. It has however not continued without opposition. This opposition, the striving of Nations and of peoples for freedom, gave birth to the principles of Sovereignty and of Human Rights.
The rise of global capitalism and of geo-politics has begun to erode these principles and the protections they afford.
Increasingly we see the borders of Nations being blurred by emerging power blocks and free trade agreements. The desire of corporations, of empires, to profit and plunder is being re-framed in the language of Rights. The so called ‘right to profit’ has, and continues to be, elevated above those simple and fundamental Human Rights which, though well understood and so clearly expressed, we have yet to uphold.
Internationally it seems there is more willingness to enact and enforce the provisions of trade agreements than of Human Rights Declarations.
Our Sovereignty has been usurped. Governments gone rogue now ignore the very principles that Democracy relies upon.
The Constitution conversation is happening right now.
