An almost-capacity audience gathered for the Changing Minds MHAW Panel Discussion at the Grey Lynn Community Centre last Thursday evening. Attendees were from a range of community, NGO and government organisations and we were privileged to have a knowledgeable and experienced panel and facilitator.
Some of the themes that emerged were: mental health leglislation, the dilemmas it creates and whether or not it has a role in the future; the need for more of a recovery focus in both mental heath and the criminal justice system; stigma and its negative impacts; the broader societal context and the impacts of consumerism, and the need for a wider range of treatment options.
We would like to thank all those that participated and also extend our gratitude to the panelists: Dr Camille Nakhid, Phillip Patston, Mary O’Hagan, Joey McDonald and Dr Huhana Hickey and also to our facilitator: Magdel Hammond, Chair of the Changing Minds Governance Board. We be releasing the video of the discussion in due course so keep an eye out for it in the newsletter and on our website.
