What is recoVRy?

recoVRy uses the power of virtual reality (VR) technology to create a simple, safe and effective way to understand the experience of people who have recovered from serious mental health and addiction problems.

The focus is on resilience and recovery and - where possible - real people tell their own stories, using evidence-based strategies to reduce the prejudice, self-stigma and discrimination faced by people with mental health and addiction challenges.

Whether you work in healthcare or are a caring whānau member or friend wanting to support someone you care about – welcome, and thank you for taking this journey with us!

Why should I watch this?

Watching these stories can deepen your empathy, compassion and gain an in-depth understanding of an experience, encouraging  you to understand how people experience mental health and challenges.

These stories also offer hope – something very important to the hearts and minds of Tāngata Mātau ā-wheako (people with personal experience of mental distress and/or addiction).

How does it work?

We have created our first short interactive film featuring real stories from real people about thriving through mental health and addiction challenges. While watching, you can also virtually interact with the storyteller and collect tools as you watch, to support yourself or others on their recovery journey.

What will I see?

“Mockingbird” is a maternal mental health story, originally developed as a theatre play. It aims to build awareness and capture the experience of what it was like for women admitted into mental health facilities with a diagnosis of psychosis or mania across four generations.

Watch and learn about the good and the bad of pre, post and peri-natal mental healthcare from over more than a century.

Mockingbird demonstrates why clinicians need to develop women and family-centred care for optimal health outcomes. It also shows how the lack or the presence of a supportive community influences, negatively or positively, the individual’s chances of recovery. It is the first of what we hope will be many more stories we tell about experiences of mental healthcare in Aotearoa.
