Changing Minds in the Deaf Community

This year Changing Minds partnered with Tall Tree Jared Flitcroft (Ngāti Maniapoto) of JPF Films, to deliver a Deaf Video series - by and for the Deaf community.

This series is designed to raise awareness around mental distress, and the particular challenges faced by the Deaf that other resources have missed. Above all, the videos aim to build trust within the Deaf community so people feel safe to share and reach out for support.

'The Deaf community are in a very unique situation,' says Jared. 'We need more support than others. With these videos we've created a one-stop shop with complete mental health resources, where the Deaf community and deaf people have their own choices on where to go for the resources that fit their needs.”

We were delighted to collaborate on this project with Jared, an award-winning Tāngata Turi filmmaker with a strong focus on accessibility for the Deaf community. The videos he produced embrace Deaf Lived Experience to create culturally appropriate resources that educate, inform and inspire. Themes range across mental health literacy, safe disclosure, accessing and navigating support services, and how to support each other from a peer perspective.

We're excited to now be able to share these six videos with you:

  • Introduction to Mental Health

  • Challenges Faced by Deaf

  • Building a Support System

  • Breaking the Stigma

  • Navigating Mental Health Services

  • Mindfulness
