Public Consultation: Draft Suicide Prevention Action Plan

Have your say!

Changing Minds has been asked by the Ministry of Health (Manatū Hauora) to provide a Lived Experience voice as part of their broader consultation on the latest Draft Suicide Prevention Plan 2025-2029. To give us time to prepare our feedback, we are closing submissions 5pm Friday 18th October

We realise this isn’t a lot of time to get your thoughts down, so we are holding four live group sessions on Zoom to capture your feedback on key questions about the Draft Strategy.

Who can come along?

We warmly welcome anyone with Lived Experience who would like to contribute to this important work. Lived Experience means you could identify with any or all of the below:

  • Tāngata whai ora (a person who has experienced mental distress)

  • Whānau of tāngata whai ora

  • Beareaved by suicide

  • A person with lived and/or living experience of navigating suicidal thinking/actions.

What are the key questions?

  1. Under each of the four areas mentioned in the draft strategy, do you agree with the proposed actions for health and cross-government agencies? How could these actions be improved?

  2. What other actions do you think could be included for government agencies to consider?

  3. What do government agencies need to consider when implementing these actions to ensure what is delivered meets the needs of communities?

  4. Is there anything else you want government agencies to know about what is needed to prevent suicide?

  5. Is there anything else you want to share?

I’m interested! What’s next?

If you would like to share your Lived Experience with Changing Minds to help inform the final Suicide Prevention Strategy 2025-2029, there a few ways you can get involved.

  1. Attend one of our four live online Zoom sessions. Register here.

  2. Complete a written submission here.

  3. Book in a 1-on-1 talk with a Changing Minds team member during the week of Monday 14th – Friday 18th October. You can book this by emailing us at community@changingminds.org.nz

  4. Send us a video submission to community@changingminds.org.nz.

Alternatively, our friends at Te Kete Pounamu are hosting some Māori Lived Experience sessions, and you can find out more about those here.

Synergia, who are partnering with the Ministry of Health on this important kaupapa are also running sessions, which you can find more about and register to attend here.

Lastly, if you want to submit directly to the Ministry of Health, you can do that here. Submissions close Friday 1st November.

Your wellbeing matters to us

Some of the things you hear in the session you choose to attend might raise some emotions. We aim to offer the safest space possible, and will have a qualified Peer Support Worker available at every session if you need to talk. You can also find supportive resources on our website.

Thank you for your taonga.
